Have you heard this song?
Hey Neighbor!
Welcome back to THE NEIGHBORHOOD! This week’s story is about a song that I discovered in dance class a few years ago.
I’m going to share the lyrics to We’re All In This Together by Ben Lee.
Woke up this morning
I suddenly realized
We're all in this together
I started smiling
'Cause you were smiling
And we're all in this together
I'm made of atoms
You're made of atoms
And we're all in this together
And long division
Just doesn't matter
'Cause we're all in this together, yeah
I saw you walking
In the city
We're all in this together
The city's changing
'Cause we are changing
And we're all in this together
Every twelve seconds
Someone remembers
That we're all in this together
In the kitchen
Of your rent-control apartment
We're all in this together
Come on, baby
I don't mean to rush you
I only wanted to reach out and touch you
I've gotta start to open my heart
I know you think
About jumping ship before it sinks
But we are all in this together
Ask a scientist
It's quantum physics
We are all in this together
And on the subway
We feel like strangers
But we're all in this together
Yeah, I love you and you love her
And she loves him
But we are all in this together
You know, baby
There's never been protection
In all the history of human connection
Come on, darling
It's alright to show me
You don't ever need to be lonely
Once you start to open your heart
I saw you crying
I started crying
'Cause we're all in this together
And then religion
It's a big decision
But we're all in this together, yeah
We are all in this together
We're all in this together
We're all in this together
We're all in this together
Aren’t those beautiful?! I heard this song for the first time at one of my favorite dance classes at Steps on Broadway. Billy Griffin plays this song as his students are walking into class. As I was crafting The Neighborhood, I was struck by the lyrics all over again.
And on the subway, we feel like strangers but we’re all in this together.
Isn’t that true?
Yes, this is a city of strangers, but we work together to keep each other safe. We banged pots and pans and cheered healthcare workers every night at 7 PM during the height of the pandemic. One time I saw an elderly woman fall while riding the subway, and every person around her got up to make sure she was ok and assisted her into a seat. Yes, people can be stuck in their own little bubble, but when needed, they are there to lend a hand. We truly are all in this together. Thanks for the gentle reminder and call to action, Ben Lee
What about you, Neighbor? How have you been a good neighbor to someone in your community? When were you a witness to that kindness?
I look forward to hearing your stories.
I’ve Got You in My Pocket,
Jackie
